texas roadhouse restaurant review

As a nutritionist, I recently visited Texas Roadhouse Steak House to try their famous steak cuts and evaluate their menu from a health perspective. Overall, I was impressed with the quality of the food and the variety of options available and their ability to customize to my needs.

First, let's talk about steak cuts. Texas Roadhouse offers a range of cuts, from the most lean to the most marbled. Here's a breakdown of the cuts from most to least lean:

  1. Sirloin: This is the leanest cut of steak available at Texas Roadhouse. It's a flavorful and tender cut that's relatively low in fat and calories. A 6-ounce sirloin contains around 280 calories and 12 grams of fat.

  2. Filet: The filet is another lean cut of steak that's known for its tenderness. It's a bit higher in calories and fat than the sirloin, with a 6-ounce filet containing around 360 calories and 18 grams of fat.

  3. Ribeye: The ribeye is a popular cut that's known for its marbling and flavor. It's higher in calories and fat than the sirloin and filet, with a 6-ounce ribeye containing around 470 calories and 40 grams of fat.

  4. T-bone: The T-bone is a combination of the tenderloin and the strip steak. It's a flavorful cut that's higher in calories and fat than the previous cuts, with a 6-ounce T-bone containing around 540 calories and 42 grams of fat.

  5. Porterhouse: The Porterhouse is a large, hearty cut that's similar to the T-bone but has a larger portion of tenderloin. It's the highest in calories and fat of all the cuts, with a 6-ounce Porterhouse containing around 780 calories and 64 grams of fat.

As a nutritionist, I typically recommend choosing leaner cuts of meat to keep calories and saturated fat in check. The sirloin and filet are both great options for those looking for a leaner cut of steak. However, if you're looking for something more flavorful and don't mind the extra calories and fat, the ribeye, T-bone, and Porterhouse can all be enjoyed in moderation or as part of a Keto diet.

My personal opinion is that Roadhouse has a consistent flavor and consistently good quality steak. It's quality food with a friendly budget. It's perfect for a celebration or just a weeknight meal, and with plenty of options to choose from it will not through you off your meal plan or invoke any guilty feelings.

In addition to steak, Texas Roadhouse offers a range of other menu items, including salads, grilled chicken dishes, and seafood options. I was pleased to see that they offer a variety of side dishes, including steamed vegetables, sweet potatoes, and baked potatoes, which are all great options for adding nutrients and fiber to your meal. I suggest ordering your potato plain to skip out on those unnecessary butter calories.

One thing to keep in mind when dining at Texas Roadhouse (or any steakhouse, for that matter) is portion size. Something I refer to as "portion distortion" is very easy to fall into when dining out. The steak portions at Texas Roadhouse are quite generous, so it's important to keep your portion in check if you're watching your calorie intake. You can ask for a to-go box at the beginning of the meal and save half of your steak for another meal.

Another thing to watch out for is the legendary roadhouse rolls and cinnamon honey butter. The servers will keep bringing them as long as you are sitting there. A better option is the complimentary bag of peanuts and you can just throw your shells right on the floor!

Overall, I was impressed with Texas Roadhouse Steak House and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quality steakhouse experience. Just remember to choose leaner cuts of steak, pair your meal with nutritious butter-free sides, and watch your portion size to keep your meal healthy and balanced.
